Willow Springs - Planning:

Willow Springs is a 40,000 sq.ft. commercial project located 10 miles North of Durango, Colorado. Greg Madeen not only designed the Architecture but entirely designed the 4 acre site development. The three buildings, parking and a garden park radiate around the Trimble Hot Springs overflow detention pond. A 37 unit Inn is to have solar domestic hot water. Two other general commercial buildings will have restaurants and specialty shops located at ground level plus second level offices. The two general commercial buildings are to have a solar photovoltaic system for electricity production. An innovative sky bridge connects the upper level of the general commercial buildings. A geothermal heat system is also planned. There are many other green features planned for the project.

Eco Subdivision - Planning:

Greg Madeen was part of the planning and artistic team for a 28 unit ecological subdivision in northern New Mexico. Some of the environmental features are:

  • community wetlands sewer system
  • permaculture based landscaping
  • community greenhouse
  • year round solar heated swimming pool
  • exercise center
  • pond
  • 3 parks

South West Open School - Planning:

Madeen Architecture developed a 6 acre master plan for S.W. Open School in Cortez, CO. Part of this 150 student charter school's concept was to take troubled teens and help teach them usable skills. Some of the older students could build a sustainable structure such as a strawbale classroom or an adobe art center. Lessons could be incorporated with physical activities instead of just classroom work. Besides numerous classrooms being planned, many other green concepts were presented: kitchen/dining with attached greenhouse, wetlands sewage treatment, student run gardens, passive solar community gymnasium shared with the city of Cortez, P.V. and wind generator electric, adobe garden walls, a yurt and numerous exterior activity areas

Earthrise - Planning:

In 2002 Madeen Architecture created planning and artist rendering for a multi-use passive solar adobe development along the Animas River. Planned was 50 residential units, 40,000 s.f. of general commercial space, a community center, light industrial, under ground parking and hiking trails.

Frijoles Village - Planning:

Greg Madeen helped initiate a neo-traditional village that encompassed 500 residential units and a commercial plaza modeled after Santa Fe, New Mexico. Greg and Carol Madeen did extensive research into historic development patterns set up by Santa Fe's founding Spaniards in which urban centers, such as the Plaza, were developed around common open space. The same form is typical on a neighborhood scale with individual homes sharing a courtyard. This introverted and group-oriented approach turned its back on the street and strengthened the family. A compound with a shared driveway led to L- or U- shaped buildings that also tempered the climate. Many properties were set up with long narrow lots perpendicular to irrigation ditches, acequias, which feed flood irrigation for family farms. After completing this research, Greg did drafting and design on master plan drawings for this new town's founding members. A majority of this project has been built.

Multi-purpose Compressed Earth Block (CEB) tribal centers to be built by tribal members utilizing site soil.

Sailing Hawks:

Site Re-Design for an ecological world class spa in Arizona. Re-Designed all residential units, parking and rotated orientation of project, new supercool pier concept, plus numerous other modifications.
